What is Weightlifting
Weightlifting (popularly referred to as Olympic Weightlifting or Oly lifting) refers to the competitive sport of lifting barbells as practiced in the Olympic Games. Competitors in different weight categories demonstrate their strength in two lifts that require the barbell to be hoisted overhead.
The Snatch: The barbell is taken from floor to an extended position overhead in one continuous motion.
The Clean & Jerk: A two-part lift in which the barbell is taken from the floor to the shoulder position (the clean), and then after a brief recovery period, thrusted overhead by a combined effort of the arms and legs (the jerk).
Weightlifting is an important training tool because of its unique ability to generate power and speed, and because of its ability to elicit neuromuscular response, coordination and strength. Properly executed, the snatch and the clean & jerk are both dynamic and explosive while appearing graceful.
